"Mixed Kids Are the Cutest"

I saw this article and it got me thinking. I often get comments like this about my daughter. While I do believe my daughter IS THE CUTEST, it bothers me sometimes when people make that comment after they find out my daughter is of mixed race.

My family is the "color of the rainbow" and I LOVE each and everyone of them unconditionally regardless of their skin color.

I don't entirely agree with the article where it says that statements like these are "racist". I think that's a bit of an extreme. I do think people make these comments thinking they are being complimentary when in actuality, they are not. I mean, telling me my daughter is cute because she is of mixed race implies that J & I (who are not of mixed race) are just mediocre. I beg to differ. I happen to think my husband is the hottest guy out there and I am sure he will tell you the same thing about me :-).
I like to think 2 beautiful people made an even more beautiful baby :-).

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with this article and why?

In the meantime, here's a picture of my princess with my handsome hubby all ready for Church.

Hope you're having a fabulous week!

  1. Both of them are gorgeous! I get that too girl, it's crazy.. I have some of "everything" in my gene pool but I don't feel the need to explain that to everyone! People sometimes ask me if I have Caucasian in my family since Greyson has red almost copper hair, lol.. I mostly get comments on how "light" he is and how he doesn't look black (as if I can't see how pale my child is, smh..)

  3. Hmm, for the most part I do agree with the article... On some level it does come from the "mixed is better than not mixed" line of thinking.. I'm gonna have to rethink how I respond to these types of comments from now on, thanks for this article!

    1. Yeah...I thought it was an interesting article. I think folks honestly don't mean anything mean by it. It just is something that has bothered me so when I read the article, it helped to know I was not alone.

  4. Jordan has so much hair and such a big smile! She is a cutie because her mama is a yummy mommy, not because she is mixed. I agree with the article in that it's not appropriate to say a child is cute because they are biracial. Our girls are cute because they get their looks from their hot mamas ;)

    1. This is what I tell people all of the time :) My baby looks like I did as a tot, so ... She can't help being cute-she gets it from her momma LOL!

    1. True. Color shouldn't play a role in how a child looks and personally, I think all kids are cute and unique in their own way. Some more so than others.

  6. I read this article, and I agree. I hate it when people comment on my daughter's "pretty" hair or how light she is. Uhm, my husband's white, so it should be no shock that she is lighter than I am. And yes, her hair isn't coily, but she's still little, and I hold out hope that she will have a huge afro one day, just like mine :) Cute kids are cute kids, regardless of the racial admixture.

    1. Lol...I comb my daughter's hair to push up the "puff" :-). Hubby of course thinks I am nuts for doing that. Glad I am not alone :-).

  7. When I have a child and if anyone says that to me, I'm kicking them in the teeth, seriously.

I think it's ignorance. And we all know ignorance is bliss.

It's incredible how often people tell Sean and I to have kids because our kids will be gorgeous because they know how gorgeous mixed kids are. Sigh.

  8. Lol, the biscuit analogy is just ridiculous at best. If someone said that to my child, I'd punch them.

I could be accused of ignorance, but I've heard people say that and never thought much of it. Mainly cause people always say babies are cute and seem to want to elaborate on that without much thought to it. But after reading this article, I completely agree on how inappropriate that is. And I'd hate for my child to grow up believing that they or other people are better looking or superior based on the colour of their skin or ethnic makeup.

  9. I do agree that mixed babies often turn out gorgeous but I haven't ever said it to the parents of the child. It's like saying your kids will be cute ONLY because they are of mixed ethnicity. It's like when someone says, you look really pretty today...then you start to wonder well did I look ugly yesterday? I don't think anyone ever intends it to come out that way but there it is.

  10. I just love that wedding picture, I hope you blog about your wedding one day.
I agree with Cece I think most people mean it as a compliment but once you analyze it, it definitely makes you wonder. It doesn't bother me when people tell me that, I just think in my head, of course my kids are cute, look at me :). Not conceited at all :)

Jordan is a cutie pie for sure.

  11. This kind of compliments would make me uncomfortable as well. SO far nobody as made such comment. People used to say that I am a beautiful Black girl and that made me wonder if I am beautiful because I am exotic in their eyes or if I am beautiful because I am beautiful full stop.

JOE is cute, cute not because she is mixed race. she is simply a beautiful baby!!!
