DIY Monday: Tis the season for pumpkin decor

Well, 'tis the season for pumpkin decorations! This year, I wanted to do something different. I googled and was able to find a few ideas for pumpkin decorations.
Now that JOE is getting older, she enjoys doing more arts and crafts.

The morning we decided to do the pumpkins, it was pretty cold out and we didn't want to take JAE outside so we took the pumpkins in the basement and got to work.

First thing was to set up a play area for JAE.

Our basement is currently unfinished which makes it a great place to do stuff like this that can get messy. However, I didn't want it too messy since we do use the space for other things. So I cut up trash bags (opened them up at the seams) and put each pumpkin on a bag. This ensured that cleanup would be easy afterwards.

I used a gold spray paint to spray one of the pumpkins gold.

The other one was sprayed pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month.

Since we were in the basement, we needed to open the door a bit to let out the fumes from the paint. So while that was happening, JOE took JAE on a ride in her Barbie car. Truth be told, JOE is still scared of the noise the car makes so she just gets in it, turns on the working radio and pretends to drive. Hopefully, she'll like it more next year when it is warmer out and she is older.

While the other 2 pumpkins were drying, J got to work carving the third pumpkin.

I used ribbons to decorate the gold pumpkin and secured the ribbons with tacks. Then I used the tacks to make the breast cancer awareness logo.
Then used some paper glue and cotton puffs to do the brows and mustache and goatee of Colonel Sanders. His eyes were 2 white tacks.

Overall, I think it turned out great and was definitely a nice way to spend a quiet but cold Saturday morning.

JOE painted the pumpkins at the bottom with her child care provider. She did one for herself and another for JAE.

Do you still decorate pumpkins for the season? If so, is it a family activity or do you do it alone?

  2. So cute!!

We never got to carve/decorate our pumpkins this year. We just left them outside adorning the porch. Hopefully we'll do it next year.
