DIY: Girls jumper skirt

I love trying to make use of leftover fabric I already have in the house since I am sure my hubby is tired of me scouting the fabric aisle at Wal-mart.

So I decided to use some of the leftover strips from this dress. I figured I'd make a circle skirt for JOE.

I laid it out the way I wanted and sewed it up thinking I'd have enough material for a skirt.

That was a complete fail. I didn't have enough to make a skirt. So I put that aside for a possible future accent pillow perhaps?

I went digging in my stash of materials and found the one below. I bought it a few months back during a sale. BUT turns out I didn't have enough material. What to do? What to do?

I decided to measure it out and cut out the material in squares. Except, I didn't just want to do a plain skirt. I wanted a girly jumper. So I decided to go back to my trusted go to site...Pinterest! I found this and this. I figured "why not?"

I went to work with cutting up the fabric and getting it to "work". The pattern for the skirt portion came from here. The straps, I made using JOE's measurements.

Also leftovers from another project.

All 4-squares together.

Sewed and ready to go.

Pinning to add the elastic for the waist.

Then I had a "bright idea"! Why not use some of the leftover tulle from my wedding dress to add some poof to the dress?

So I did it.

Straps are done.

I pinned the straps to make sure it'll work.

I liked it so I sewed it in.

And added large buttons to match.

I love the way it turned it. So much so that when I gave JOE a choice of outfits to wear to Church on Sunday, she actually chose this one!

I couldn't get a good picture of her standing so this is pretty much as good as it gets. Here she is "working hard".

No...I didn't let her go to church like that. A good friend of mine watched her on Saturday evening while J & I went out to dinner. This is the outcome of that :-).

This was how she went to church. She wouldn't stay still long enough for me to take a picture hence the blurry shot.

 Expertise needed: Comfortable beginner.
Total Approximate time: This was done over the course of 5-days because I kept having other errands to run and things to do. The total amount of time actually spent sewing was probably more like 90-minutes for everything. I also hand sewed the buttons.
Total spent on materials: The fabric was on sale $ $4.49 a yard. I only got 1/2 a yard. Hence my dilemma with making this fit. But it worked!  :-). Everything else I already had at home. The total cost was $2.25. Can't beat that!
Feedback: I like the way it turned out and it certainly gives me ideas for future outfits and possibly refashioning other items she grows out of. I definitely will be doing this again.

You can purchase a similar skirt from AyoBE Boutique.
